Character

Name: Tulio
Series: The Road to El Dorado
Timeline: towards the end of the movie, having decided to leave El Dorado with Chel and the gold - after Miguel overhears them, but not having confronted Tulio about it
Canon Resource Links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_to_El_Dorado http://www.animatedheroes.com/tulio.html (and also the movie is up on youtube)

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality: In essence, Tulio has a lot of self-interest. Generally, he will pursue things because they benefit him or his goals. It’s a prominent and in some ways absolutely selfish aspect to his personality, but it’s not at all the only one. He clearly possesses morals enough to consider other people’s feelings – even if it might just be the people he cares about (the others don’t seem to be interesting to him at all). I’m thinking of the end of the movie, where he sacrifices the gold to help save El Dorado. The city of gold was never overly important to him beyond the fact that it was, well, made of gold, but Miguel fell in love with the city and the people there and Miguel is Tulio’s partner – and as such he’ll do things against his own will for his partner’s sake.

It applies to Miguel, at least. On the whole I believe Tulio is a difficult person to approach. He seems to guard himself with sarcasm and skepticism, being suspicious of new people. You’ll have to prove your worth to him. Even though Tulio might not be likely to admit it, he’s loyal and cares for the few chosen ones. He’s stubborn, and possibly too proud to admit mistakes. It might stem from his desire to be on top of any situation – to be in control. He’s not one to take risks, not really. Above all things, he’s a realist, and he knows a situation might turn bad if you treat it wrong. He’ll favour to “lay low” rather than to attempt to make things better if he things the situation he’s in is fragile, in that sense. In the kind of situations where he can manipulate the circumstances to gain things (such as by cheating), though, he will – but I expect that to be the kind of risk he’ll take when he’s confident he won’t get caught or the events won’t make a turn to hit him in the face.

One might want to be beware of his means of manipulation the people around him to serve a greater purpose, all in all. (I’m thinking about how he talked about playing out the Chief and the High Priest against each other in the movie for better results.) In the end, he really is a con artist, and being the one “with the plans”, he’s sure to find factors around him that he can somehow manipulate to his advantage, be it people or other things. He probably doesn’t do it on a too conscious level, and would most likely not try to manipulate people he actually cared about, but the people he doesn’t think of as important, the no-faces, he wouldn’t mind tricking into getting results.

Tulio seems to be too close-minded to really pay attention to the people around him. He doesn’t pick up on how things he says or do will have consequences and an impact on other people’s feelings, and will have to face these turns of events when it’s too late to take back. The fact that he’s too stubborn and proud to say sorry is definitely a weakness here. His people skills could use some work, but he’s still likable enough for other people to stick around, if they can handle his sarcasm.
Tulio is a character set on a goal, of a bright and rich future. He will work to accomplish that goal, and any short-term goal he sets up also.

Pokemon
Starter: Yanma – a male one, who is happy and eager to please and really just wants to be loved. Tulio doesn’t really name him, instead calling him Mutant Dragonfly or variations thereof. Will most likely get a good name later.

First Person Sample:
[audio, with hesitation before he starts talking – not sure if he managed to set it up correctly]

I have a bad feeling about this. Something’s not right here. Nothing here is normal. This … talking … thing is telling me to collect “badges”. And there are mutant animals … other things … everywhere. What is this, some kind of spiritual quest? I’m not a fan of the mumbo-jumbo. I just want to get the hell back home!

[a click is heard]

… Great. There are lights flashing. Great, it’s going to explode in my face.

Third Person Sample: Tulio groaned. This whole thing was too bizarre for him to handle. He’d witnessed to Tzekel-Khan and his crazy sacrifices and the city of gold, a frantic ball game with an armadillo – but this. This was unreal on an entirely different level.

The enormous mutant dragonfly enthusiastically circling him didn’t help matters.

“What do you want?” Tulio muttered at it, regretting already that he’d let it out of its … capsule … ball … thing. What was it called? A Pokéball?

And what was all of this, anyway? The whole world just seemed wrong, somehow. There was light coming from the houses that didn’t seem like they could possibly be natural. And these – these things – the pokédex and everything else that was in the rucksack – none of it made any sense in Tulio’s brain. None of it added up.

Then again, he thought while swatting a hand at the huge red insect, it’s not like he should be surprised. In the past three days he’d already seen much more than he’d ever thought he would. Maybe there were gods, and he’d royally pissed them off by pretending to be one. Maybe this was some sort of punishment.

Hey, did that mean Miguel was here too? Not that I care, he thought instantly, his eyes darkening. He didn’t want anything to do with Miguel anyway. He was just curious.

The insect let out a soft cry and Tulio glanced up at the green eyes, cringing a little at the sudden proximity. He hadn’t been aware of the dragonfly being so quick. And it was practically up in his face. He made a face and made shooing motions with his hands.

“Alright you big bug, leave me alone.”

He knew it was called a Yanma. One of the first things he’d done after being locked out of the house –after yelling incomprehensible things for a while – was to look through what he’d been, well, given. He hadn’t figured out yet what to make of the situation. He wanted to use them to get back, well, home. Or even to El Dorado again. Anyplace familiar. He didn’t like not knowing what was going on; in fact, hated it. He felt like he didn’t have any control of the situation, but by being a jerk to this alleged new, well, partner, and pretending he had any choice in the matter of keeping him or not, made him feel much better about himself.

The Yanma made a sound of protest, but Tulio just glared at him. At the almost too expressive face the pokémon made in return, Tulio heard himself sigh. It was such a Miguel-face.
